Today marks 14 years since the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Fourteen years ago, 19 members of al-Qaeda hi-jacked four airliners and carried out the suicide missions. Two of the planes flew into Twin Towers in New York City. A third plane hit the Pentagon and a fourth crashed in a field in Pennsylvania.
A total of 2,977 people were killed in the terrorist attack. Of those victims, 184 lost their lives at the Pentagon. Those victims are being remembered Friday morning with a ceremony at the Pentagon Memorial.
Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Paul Selva will host the private remembrance for the family members of the victims.
Observances are planned around the country. President Barack Obama is scheduled to observe the 14th anniversary of the attacks with a visit to Fort Meade in Maryland. He is expected to pay tribute to the men and women in uniform for serving the nation in the years since the attacks.
Some members of Congress plan to spend part of the anniversary discussing up to $25 million in federal funding for a ground zero memorial.
