Muriel Clayton, a 92-year-old Dallas woman adopted her 76-year-old cousin to formalize their loving relationship for the past 65 years.
Mary Smith, 76, knew Clayton as her older cousin when she was growing up, but after her father died and her mother fell ill, Clayton took it upon herself to raise the girl.
Now, six decades later, Smith is officially Clayton’s daughter.
“I wanted her to be mine,” Clayton told WFAA8. “And she is!”
This year, one day before Mother’s Day, Clayton invited Smith over and informed her she would like her to be her legal daughter. Smith was overjoyed with the proposal and told Smith she would love to be her daughter.
On June 9, in Dallas County Court, the two legally became mother and daughter.
“I have worked jigsaw puzzles, and my life had been a beautiful picture. But one piece was missing, and that was Mary,” she told WFAA8. “And now I’ve got that piece in place. Officially!”
