A Pennsylvania woman was found dead in her cell June 7, halfway through a two-day sentence in Berks County Prison for unpaid debt. Eileen DiNino, 55, owed $2,000 in fines and court costs related to dozens of truancy violations her children racked up since 1999, the Associated Press reports.
DiNino was found unresponsive in her bunk bed. Staff members performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until and ambulance arrived.
DiNino was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 2:04 p.m.
The death remains under investigation but officials said there was no indication the circumstances were suspicious. An autopsy was inconclusive, but toxicology test results are pending.
DiNino had been jailed on Friday as a result of nine truancy cases, officials said.
