Giant squid captured off Japan ‘Video’ : Second On California Coast Is A Hoax

If you frequent social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, chances are you’ve come across a photo of a giant squid that allegedly washed ashore along the Santa Monica coast line in California.

If you thought the photo was too bizarre to be true, you were correct.

The article claims that the squid was a victim of radiation from Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.

“Scientists believe that following the 2011 disaster at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant an unknown number of sea creatures suffered genetic mutations that triggered uncontrolled growth – or “radioactive gigantism.”

However, National Geographic says the photo was fake citing the largest giant squid ever recorded by scientists only measures 43 feet or 12 meters long which is nowhere close to the supposed 160-foot or 49-meter in length of the giant squid that’s taken over the Internet.

Giant squid captured off Japan, and this is no hoax

The squid was discovered after Shigernori Goto, a fisherman, pulled up a fishing net that was set at a depth 229 feet.

The squid died when it was hauled to the surface.

It measured 19 feet in length and weighed just over 330 pounds, reported The Yomiuri Shimbun.
