Solar Igniting Birds in Mid-Air in California?

A solar-power generating station in central California is killing birds as they catch fire in the reflection of light from its massive array of mirrors, and now there are concerns that initial estimates of bird losses are too low.

California’s energy commission is looking into this new form of solar energy due to reports of birds being zapped likely by sun rays concentrated by thousands of mirrors at the BrightSource Energy plant.

Employee call the birds “streamers” due to the meteor-like trail of smoke seen as the birds fall.

The plant is located in the Mojave Desert and is owned by Google and two California energy companies.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is urging the state to hold off on permitting another plant of the same kind until a study of what it says is the significant number of birds igniting and falling out of the sky above the plant at a rate of one ever couple of minutes.

    1. who cares about a few birds, big deal, they are flying rats, when you make omlets you have to break a few eggs get over it.

      • This is just not a few birds, this is millions of birds. Why don’t you set your hand on fire and tell us how good it feels…you are what is wrong with this world.Comparing omelets to innocent birds on their migration does not make sense.I am definitely getting rid of Google.

    2. Incinerating unknown numbers of birds is one of many reasons why solar energy development should be decentralized, meaning that it should be heavily subsidized and placed on people’s roofs rather than centralized in order to make loads of money for those greedy bastards at Google, and the rest of the Fortune 500. As for the last commenter…another example of the pathetically low level of science literacy in the US.

    3. I just cannot imagine the pain and fear these birds go through, they get attracted by the light and then burn out.Off shore oil platforms do the same thing. It seems man has not even reached the bottom rung of the evolutionary ladder. What has turned man into monsters.
