13 killed in land waste collapse in Myanmar, many feared missing

At least 13 people have died in a landslide Tuesday in northern Myanmar’s jade mining region. The tragedy hit Kachin state’s Hpakant town just five months after a similar incident there left dozens of people missing.

The land waste was from a jade mine undertaken by Yadanar Sin company and located near Gwe Kha Hmaw village in Hpakan township. The victims were searching pieces of jade on the land waste when the land waste collapsed.

A local emergency worker said that the missing people were feared dead.

It is difficult for emergency workers to rescue as there is no machines. Moreover, a small collapse of land waste had occurred Tuesday morning 7 a.m. local time when the emergency workers were searching for the missing people, he added.

A total of 13 people were also killed and four others injured due to a landslide in Hpakan in early this month.

At least 100 people were killed in a landslide in Hpakan in November 2015. Over 40 landslides occurred in this town in 2015.
