Justin Bieber: Pop star wins his first ever Grammy Award

The Weeknd and Justin Bieber both marked milestone nights at the 58th Grammy Awards, where they picked up their first career Grammy trophies, nailed their first career Grammy performances, and mutually celebrated years-in-the-making career reinventions.

Justin Bieber took home the best dance recording trophy as part of a collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo on the song “Where Are U Now.”

Singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell won a Grammy for best album notes on “Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, A Ballet, Waiting To Be Danced.”

The Weeknd won two awards, for best R&B performance on “Earned It” from the soundtrack for the film “Fifty Shades Of Grey” and for best urban contemporary album for “Beauty Behind the Madness.”

The Weeknd was nominated for a total of seven Grammys. Hip-hop star Drake lost all five awards he was nominated for.

Producers Jon Haust from London, and Peter Moore Best from Hamilton, shared the Grammy for best historical album for “The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11” featuring music by Bob Dylan and Toronto’s the Band.

Two other Canadians took home Grammys including Burlington’s Charles Moniz who was part of the team which won record of the year for Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” featuring Bruno Mars.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar led the Grammy winners on Monday with five wins but lost album of the year to Taylor Swift who won for her album “1989.”

Swift made history as the first woman to win album of the year twice after also taking the Grammy in 2009 for “Fearless.”

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran won his first Grammys, including song of the year for “Thinking Out Loud.” Pop star Meghan Trainor, who broke out last year with her body-confident hit “All About That Bass,” was named Best New Artist.

Hip-hop took center stage as Lamar won best rap album and delivered the night’s most socially charged performance.

Other winners included blues-rock group Alabama Shakes, who took home three wins including best rock performance for “Don’t Wanna Fight,” and Broadway musical “Hamilton” won best musical theater album.
