Elderly Woman’s Decomposing Body Found in House She Shares with Her Daughter, Police and prosecutors in Fulton County tell local media that Hope Ruller may have died in her first-floor apartment in Gloversville as long as 14 months ago before being discovered Dec. 29 after police received a request from a relative to check on her welfare.

“In the upstairs apartment lived Ms. Ruller’s daughter who was Mary Kirsteen, and Mary Kirsteen did live with an adult child,” said District Attorney Louise Sira.

Police are unsure just how long Ruller laid dead in her home only saying it was many months. In addition to interviewing family and neighbors, police are looking at the family’s financial records.

“We are at the mercy right now of other agencies, who we have subpoenaed records to, we are waiting for those records to come into us,” VanDeusen said.

“Often times, when people fail to report the death of an elderly person, perhaps there is financial motive,” Sira said.

District Attorney Sira said although they can’t yet connect the dots in this case, it does seem similar to a case from 2003.

“We did have a similar case in Fulton County years ago involving the death of Helen Travis. Helen was found kept in a Rubbermaid garbage container at the home of her son, Richard Travis,” Sira said.

In that case Travis and his girlfriend continued cashing his mothers social security checks before being caught and sent to prison. It’s unclear if that is what happened this time in Gloversville.
