New Anti-spam legislation to take effect July 1

Most people with an email account have noticed a large number of recent messages asking them to sign up again to continue to receive emails. The reason is a new federal spam law that comes into effect next week.

Vice-President of Communications at the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, Satinder Chera tells 570 News the sender needs to prove they have consent.

“If the Government walks in and says, prove to us you have his consent, I have to be able to show that record.”

Chera says the majority of small businesses (62%) have not taken steps to comply – as they don’t consider interacting this way with their customers as spamming.

He says according to their survey, only 15 per cent of owners are aware of the new legislation.
